Indiana AHEC Scholars is a program that empowers students to learn about caring for rural and urban populations and expand their practice readiness skills through online courses and community experiences.
The AHEC Scholars Program is a nationally recognized program, managed by AHECs throughout the country.
Students in the final two years of an accredited health professions program - two-year degree programs are eligible to apply.
As an Indiana AHEC Scholar, you will build relationships and networks with healthcare professionals, explore career opportunities, and gain valuable experience working in team-based environments.
Absolutely not! There is no tuition for the AHEC Scholars Program. In fact, each Scholar receives a stipend of $800 in the first year and $1000 in the second year. This $1800 stipend is provided to help offset travel and related expenses.
Nope! This interdisciplinary program welcomes students from all health professions with diverse backgrounds and educational experience. You will learn from your field experiences, online courses, and your peers. What you learn could help you stand out in the future!
When you apply, you will be asked to select up to three Indiana AHEC regions where you have housing/transportation available. Selection(s) should reflect the regions where you live, attend college, or have other important ties. All selections need to be regions where you can reasonably participate in community experiences throughout the academic year as well as over the summer.
Each of the nine Indiana AHEC Regional Centers has its own cohort of up to 15 students per year. Learn more about each region here.
If you have question about your program’s eligibility, check out this page or contact Danielle Bruno, the Scholars Program Manager.
The Scholars program focuses on eight core competencies – behavioral health integration, cultural competency, interprofessional education, emerging issues, practice transformation, social determinants of health, connecting communities and supporting health professionals, and virtual learning and telehealth.
